Formerly known as the Birla Bhavan or Birla House, the Gandhi Smriti is a dedicated museum to Mahatma Gandhi. This was the place where Mahatma Gandhi spent his last few days before he was assassinated. The house originally belonged to the Birla’s, who are today’s business tycoons.
This house was built in 1928 by Ghanshyamdas Birla who was visited by Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel frequently. The house was purchased from KK Birla in 1971 by the government, only to be converted into museum. It was renamed Gandhi Smriti and inaugurated on 15 th August, 1973. The building is now home to several artefacts, which are basically things Mahatma Gandhi used as a childor teenager. A Marty’s Column stands outside the building. This is the exact spot where he was assassinated.
