Located in the popular Chandni Chowk near Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, the Gauri Shankar Temple is over 800 years old and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple houses an 800-year-old Lingam, encased in a marble sculpt of a female organ and is surrounded by snakes made of silver. This represents the centre of the universe.
A Martha soldier named Apa Ganga Dhar, who was a dedicated devotee of Lord Shiva, built the temple. History says that he was injured severely at one of the battles and was left with a bleak chance of survival. He then performed penance to Lord Shiva and promised to build a temple if he recovered. This temple is a result of the promise the brave warrior made.
Visit the temple during the festival of Shivratri, as it is decorated with lights and decorations. The festival also brings about several devotional activities and programs organised by the temple’s association.
