Navratri: A Celebration of Victory Over Evil

Navratri is one of the most popular Hindu festivals and is celebrated over a span of nine days. During the nine days, people celebrate the nine different forms of Goddess Durga. Also known as Shakti or Devi, Goddess Durga is considered one of the strongest influences of positivity and power among Hindu gods.

Through the nine days there are several pujas performed, each unique to Goddess Durga’s form. On the first day, devotees offer pure ghee to the deity. This is said to result in a blessing of good health. The second day, devotees offer sugar. Another ritual that brings about a healthy life. On the third day sweets are offered to the deity. Legend has it that this will bring an end to the sorrow in one’s life. The fourth day sees offerings of Malpua (sweet pancake), which is said to improve one’s strength. On the fifth, sixth and seventh days, bananas, honey and jaggery are offered respectively with a hope to live a life with very few misfortunes.  On the eighth and ninth day coconut and sesame seeds are offered to the deity. These are said to keep the young members of the family safe and eliminate the fear of death.
